It is still the case that printing on paper is indispensable in day-to-day business. If, however, printing jobs need to be initiated from mobile devices, it’s hard to know what to do. This is because mobile devices and printers are inherently not really compatible with each other. In this three-part series on our blog, we will explain to you why mobile printing is gaining in importance, the possibilities that are available today and what the advantages and disadvantages of them are.

Why is mobile printing becoming more and more important?

For some years now, it has been apparent that the aspect of “mobile printing” has been a component of the printing infrastructure issue in many major tenders. Product roll-outs of comprehensive mobile printing solutions are currently taking place in companies. However, many of those responsible for IT and purchasers are wondering whether their users need this?

Companies are relying more and more on the strategic use of mobile devices when diagramming business processes. If smartphones and tablets were mostly provided for field staff at first so that they were able to check emails and manage appointments in addition to telephoning, now there are more and more employees who work primarily or even exclusively with mobile devices. As an example, an international group of companies recently equipped 600 members of their German subsidiary’s sales staff with tablets instead of laptops. These employees still want (or need) to print as well.

Many companies are concerned about what an optimum solution portfolio for their users may look like. Depending on their requirements, they can choose from four alternative solutions currently available:

  • Manufacturer’s app and email,
  • Mobile device printing functions,
  • Using cloud services and
  • Output management systems (OMS).

We will present you with these four options in our next two blog entries on the topic of “Mobile printing”.
